Online booking glossary for local service businesses

This glossary defines the terms local businesses meet when they put booking online, and the terms HelpWin's studies and the free Book Check use. Each entry starts with the definition in one or two sentences, then says how the term is used on this site and which guide covers it.

Terms about how the test works

These are the definitions HelpWin's studies and the free Book Check use. Where a measurement depends on one, the page that reports it links here.

Booking path

A booking path is any visible way for a visitor to book, or to ask for an appointment or an estimate, from a page: a booking tool, a link to a booking page, or a form made for requests.

HelpWin's studies count a recognised booking tool or booking wording on the homepage as a path. The free Book Check is stricter: it gives full credit for a recognised tool or a link to a booking page, and only partial credit for booking wording alone.

Established site

In HelpWin's studies, an established site belongs to a business that is not a chain location, has a live website on its own domain, and has at least 25 Google reviews.

The rule keeps the sample to businesses that already did the expensive part: a paid website and a track record. It excludes small or do-it-yourself pages, so a study figure describes established sites only.

Plausible range

A plausible range is the span the true share probably falls in, given how many sites were tested. HelpWin reports a 95% Wilson interval.

A small sample gives a wide range, which is why a trade with few tested sites carries a warning and a trade below the minimum gets no page of its own.

Homepage test

The homepage test fetches a business's homepage once, without running scripts, and looks for a booking tool or booking wording.

It reads the page the way a simple crawler does. It can be wrong in both directions: it misses a widget that loads only through scripts, and it counts the bare word appointment as booking wording.

Script-only booking widget

A script-only booking widget is a booking button that appears only after the page's scripts have run, so a reader or crawler that does not run scripts sees no button.

This is one reason a homepage test can undercount booking paths. A plain link to a booking page in the page's HTML avoids the problem for people and for assistants.

Terms about booking tools

The pieces a business adds so a customer can book without phoning.

Booking widget

A booking widget is a small booking form that sits inside a page you already have, so customers can pick a time or send a request without leaving your site.

It usually goes in by pasting one snippet of code or one embed block.

Hosted booking page

A hosted booking page is a standalone page, run by the booking tool, that holds your services and times. You link to it instead of building it into your site.

It is the route for a business with no website, or with a site it cannot edit: the link goes on a Google Business Profile or a social page.

Embed element

An embed element is a block in a website builder that holds code or a widget from another provider, such as Wix's Embed HTML element or WordPress's Custom HTML block.

Some builders serve an embed from their own file host, which can make a booking tool that checks the page's address refuse the request.

Tap-to-call link

A tap-to-call link is a phone number written as a link, so tapping it on a phone starts the call.

The Book Check scores it separately from booking, because some customers would rather phone than book.

Quote request

A quote request is a booking path for work that is priced before it is scheduled: the customer describes the job and the business replies with an estimate and a time.

It matters for trades such as landscaping and roofing, where choosing a time slot is not the first step.
