Key findings
- 52% of established sites that loaded show no booking path: 859 of 1,663. With a sample this size, the plausible range is 49% to 54%.
- Trades are the least bookable: 101 of 187 (54%) across 7 property-service trades, against 63 of 352 (18%) for chair-and-room businesses.
- No website builder solves it: across the 7 builder groups with at least 30 sites, between 24% and 62% showed no booking path. WordPress: 48%. Wix: 60%.
- 22% of listings show no website: 989 of 4,426.
How many Toledo businesses list no website?
989 of 4,426 Google listings in the study (22%) have no website on the listing. Another 102 point only to a social media page, and 122 point to a website that did not resolve. Every figure in this section uses the same denominator: all 4,426 listings.
For these businesses the Google listing is the website. The fastest booking fix is a booking link on the Google Business Profile itself.
Of the websites that loaded, how many show a booking path?
Only one tier of sites was opened and read: 1,772 established independent websites (40% of listings). 109 of them did not load for the crawler and are left out, not counted either way. Of the 1,663 that loaded:
- 804 (48%) showed a booking tool or booking wording on the homepage.
- 859 (52%) showed neither. A visitor sees a phone number, an address and a description, and nothing to press.
These are businesses that already did the expensive part: at least 25 Google reviews and a paid website on their own domain.
Does the website builder matter?
No builder group came close to solving it. Wix, WordPress and Squarespace all accept a third-party booking embed, so the gap is not what the platform can do. It is what the business switched on.
A known weakness in the builder labels. The crawler matched brand words anywhere in a page's HTML. On 2026-10-24 we fetched the same homepages again and also looked for platform-specific files and tags. Of the 37 homepages labelled Webflow that could be fetched again, 21 were not confirmed, and 20 of the 21 we inspected carried no Webflow marker at all (the loose rule had matched text such as a class prefix). The Webflow group is therefore left out of the chart and of the range above. Shopify could be checked again on only 17 of its 34 sites, because the rest blocked the request, and 3 of those were not confirmed, so read its bar with care. The Wix, WordPress, Squarespace and Weebly labels held up: the unconfirmed share was 0%, 2%, 3% and 0%.
Wix sites: 70 of 116 (60%) showed no booking path. WordPress sites: 259 of 538 (48%). Squarespace sites: 55 of 105 (52%). The lowest group, Weebly at 24% (8 of 33), is also one of the smallest, so treat it as uncertain. The builder was detected from fingerprints in the page HTML, and 715 sites matched none. How to add booking on each: Wix, WordPress, Squarespace.
Trades versus businesses with a chair or a room
The split is not random. Businesses where the customer comes to a chair or a room (salons, barbers, vets, dentists) mostly show a booking path. Trades that go to the customer's property mostly do not.
| Group | Sites that loaded | No booking path | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trades that work at the customer's property | 187 | 101 | 54% |
| Businesses with a chair or a room | 352 | 63 | 18% |
Trades: Landscaping, Garage door, Plumbers, Flooring, Roofing, HVAC, Junk removal. Chair and room: Chiropractors, Optometrists, Hair salons, Spas, Barbers, Nail salons, Veterinary clinics, Dentists. Each group's share uses that group's own pooled denominator.
Landscaping is the extreme: 28 of 32 established landscaping sites showed no booking path. Read the chair-and-room figure with the first error below in mind: those businesses say "appointment" constantly, which the test counts, so their true online-booking rate is likely lower than shown. The gap between the groups is real; its exact size is less precise than the table suggests.
Every trade with enough data
A trade gets its own figure only if at least 30 of its established sites loaded. Below that, one or two sites swing the share too far to be useful. The plausible range is a 95% Wilson interval. Health care practices are left out of the trade pages on purpose: patient booking carries privacy rules these guides do not cover.
| Trade | Sites that loaded | No booking path | Share | Plausible range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Landscaping | 32 | 28 | 88% | 72% to 95% |
| Pet grooming | 30 | 19 | 63% | 46% to 78% |
| Gyms and fitness studios | 41 | 25 | 61% | 46% to 74% |
| Auto detailing | 34 | 19 | 56% | 39% to 71% |
| Roofing | 33 | 14 | 42% | 27% to 59% |
| HVAC | 37 | 15 | 41% | 26% to 57% |
| Auto repair | 45 | 14 | 31% | 20% to 46% |
| Hair salons | 54 | 11 | 20% | 12% to 33% |
| Spas | 39 | 7 | 18% | 9% to 33% |
| Nail salons | 33 | 5 | 15% | 7% to 31% |
| Veterinary clinics | 40 | 6 | 15% | 7% to 29% |

How this study was done
Listings. 4,426 unique Google Business listings in the Toledo, Ohio metro area, collected 2026-05-29 through the Google Places Text Search API: one search per trade and per area anchor, deduplicated by place ID. This is a search sample, not a census. A business Places did not return is not here, and each listing carries the trade of the first query that found it.
Which sites were read. Only established independent sites: not a chain location, a live website on its own domain (not a social page, not a DIY-builder subdomain), and at least 25 Google reviews. That is 1,772 of 4,426 listings. 1,175 smaller or DIY-builder sites and 266 chain or other listings were not tested, and nothing on this page describes them.
The test. On 2026-08-04 a crawler fetched each homepage once, without running JavaScript, and recorded a booking path if the HTML contained a known booking tool (for example Calendly, Acuity, Square Appointments, Setmore, Vagaro) or booking wording or links ("book now", "schedule online", "request appointment", "appointment", a link to a booking page).
The public Book Check uses a stricter rule than this study: it gives full booking credit for a booking tool or a link to a booking page, and partial credit for booking wording alone. See what the Book Check tests.
